There has been a lot of buzz about Netflix game rental recently. Netflix of course is one of the leading DVD rental by mail services, but consumers are eager to pounce on the opportunity to also rent games through them. They are known for their convenience, enormous selection and great price… so Netflix game rental would be a huge success as well.
However, up until now the talk about Netflix game rental is entirely unfounded. As mentioned, the company is a DVD rental by mail service, and currently they do not offer any video game rental services online. This is a disappointment to those of us who wanted to combine our DVD and game rental services into one easy outlet, but that’s not available through Netflix right now.
That’s not to say that Netflix game rental will never happen. They already have established instant streaming capabilities with PlayStation 3, which means that in the future there could be some kind of game connection as well.
Netflix has been known for staying ahead of the game and continuing to innovate. At first it was the whole concept of DVD rental by mail and then they continued to improve with great rating systems and online streaming. So Netflix game rental could potentially be in the works in the future if the company feels it’s a way to gain a competitive edge over other businesses and services.
It certainly would make them more appealing to a wider group of people, but you have to consider all of the challenges they would face as well. For Netflix game rental to exist they would need to invest in hundreds of thousands of video game titles, which is a huge cost. Then they would need to rework their monthly plans, offering options for just games, just movies and combo plans as well. Therefore, actually having Netflix game rental happen would require a lot of work and a significant risk, and it’s something the company will be reluctant to do.
However, considering their massive infrastructure with over 100 distribution centers, they would already have a huge leg up against other video game rental outlets if they wanted to proceed. It certainly leaves the doors open as a result to Netflix game rental, but for now, that’s all it is.
So I’m sorry to disappoint all of you, but as of this time there is no such thing as Netflix game rental. Netflix is primarily a DVD rental by mail service.
